Herts Branch Meeting
August 2008
I am sure when Fred was deciding on when to hold our best car competition he thought August should be bright and sunny. Unfortunately, unlike our club rally, the weather was badly overcast and wet which meant the number of cars presented were down slightly, but as you can see from the pictures below. we still had a nice display of cars. Chris Gilby our mechanical genius inspected the cars and narrowed it down to two. Fred then had to make the final decision and awarded our best car award to Steve Day . .On behalf of the club, we would like to thank everybody who made the effort to bring their cars along.
Herts Branch meeting
April 2008
Chris Gilbee our resident Technical person brought a huge sample of his vast collectionof vintage and veteran wireless's and crystal sets to the meeeting, and gave us a long interesting talk on the development of wireless broadcasting and the way that wireless progressed through the 1920's and 30's . He told us of the dangers that some of the early sets were prone to, with live chassis, and plugs which could be reversed with dangerous results. Many of the sets on display were in working order, Chris would like to thank both Keith and John for their help in fetching the sets along and setting everything up.
Herts Branch meeting
March 2008
Don Loveday spoke to a record attendance of members of his experiences of an Evacuee during the second World War. He recalled being taken away from London with his sisters, to far off places, where they sat throughout the day, waiting to be “fostered”. The experience was not a pleasant one, and this was clear in the way that Don told us the story. On the lighter side, Don spoke of the return to the place of evacuation fifty years afterwards, and had photos of the event. On display were a good number of WW2 memorabilia, with photos, documents and ephemera relating to Evacuees. Our thanks to Don for such a memorable evening.
